Encounter the Suspended 'Treasure Cabinet', Experience the Splendor of Chinese Arts and Crafts
2023-02-15“Prosperity Nourished by Chinese Culture” -- Basic Exhibition of Chinese Arts and Crafts — recently opened at the Chinese Traditional Culture Museum (CTCM), in the Beijing Olympic Central Area.
This exhibition spans over 6,000 square meters and showcases nearly 700 items. By incorporating new media interaction, holographic imaging, comprehensive diffraction patterns and augmented reality technologies, the exhibition seamlessly blends culture, art, technology, and fashion, passionately narrating the enduring legacy and legendary stories of Chinese arts and crafts.
A highlight of the exhibition -- a "Sky Mirror" exhibit, designed with a sky dome, has attracted many museum goers. To better present and convey the rich history of arts and crafts, the museum has introduced AR (augmented reality) technology, marking a creative leap for the exhibition.
Through "Sky Mirror," the long history of Chinese arts and crafts gradually unfolds amid the chaotic scenes of "Heaven and Earth, Universe in Desolation." Visitors feel as if they are immersed in cosmic scenes and mythological tales, interacting with ancient mythical beasts.
This immersive audio-visual experience not only provides a tangible, sensory engagement but also deepens the visitors’ understanding of traditional culture. While watching the visual content, they can use a mini-program to scan points of interest on the dome and access more information, including text introductions, videos, and virtual digital effects.
To further enhance the cultural experience, the exhibition incorporates new media interactions, projections, and holographic imaging technologies, offering a "cultural feast" that merges the history and development of Chinese arts and crafts.
These arts and crafts encompass a wide range of categories. Museum goers can see ivory carving, jade carving, bone carving, shell carving, lacquerware, metal crafts, textiles and embroidery, ceramics, bamboo and wood crafts, Huizhou ink, artistic furniture and more.
The exhibition is divided into three units: "Heavenly Creations", "Masterpieces of a Great Nation", and "A Better Life". Through a dazzling array of collections, it presents the history of Chinese arts and crafts, the achievements of arts and crafts in the New China, and their integration into people's lives in the new era.
The CTCM building features an architectural design inspired by a suspended 'Treasure Cabinet.' Strolling through the exhibition halls under the warm winter sun, visitors can observe the dynamic interplay of light and shadow created by the hollowed-out, warm, copper-colored lattice facade. They can also enjoy the live exhibitions and discover the stories behind each exhibit.
Several other exhibitions are also currently being held in the museum, including "New Arts and Crafts Dedicated to The New Era — The 6th China Contemporary Arts and Crafts Biennial & Invitational Exhibition of Works of Newly Credited Masters of Chinese Arts and Crafts," "Manufacturing and Firing Techniques of Wood-fired Ceramic Kiln in Jingdezhen," "Living Figures: Shaanxi Shadow Puppetry," "Ancestral Worship — Exhibition of Portraits of Royal Family Members of the Ming and Qing Dynasties in the Collection of Chinese National Academy of Arts," "Heaven, Earth, and Humanity — Public Art Exhibition of Liu Hengfu's Work," "Exhibition of Paper Cutting Artworks Donated by Zhang Yongzhong," and "Art from The Silk Road — Replicating Mural Paintings from Regions along the Silk Road."
