In recent years, Northwest China's Qinghai province has devoted significant efforts to the creation of the Qinghai embroidery brand - a notable intangible cultural heritage item in the field of embroidery.

It encompasses embroidery works of the Han, Tibetan, Hui, Tu, Salar and Mongolian ethnic groups in Qinghai province, as well as regionally defined intangible cultural heritage items, such as Hehuang embroidery and Huangzhong barbola, which have earned provincial and even national recognition.

With a distinctive style, it has garnered favor among people from diverse ethnic groups in Qinghai and stands as a traditional folk handicraft passed down from generation to generation. It is a testament to the interwoven history of cultural exchanges and integration of the Chinese nation.

Recognizing the importance of preserving and inheriting traditional Chinese cultures, the Qinghai provincial Party committee and provincial government have prioritized the development of Qinghai embroidery in recent years. A three-year action plan (2021-23) has been implemented to boost the development of this intangible cultural heritage.

Through such initiatives as resource surveys, financial support, educational outreach, training assistance, team building, workshop certifications, publicity campaigns and promotional activities, efforts have been made to promote the preservation, inheritance and growth of embroidery-related intangible cultural heritage projects.

Up to now, the province boasts 52 embroidery-related intangible cultural heritage projects at various levels as well as 301 representative inheritors. Qinghai is home to 40 poverty alleviation workshops and 70 incubation workshops dedicated to Qinghai embroidery, enabling the craft to aid local residents in home-based employment, income generation, and the protection of traditional culture.

This exhibition, themed embroidery in Qinghai — achievements in protection, inheritance and innovative development of Qinghai embroidery art, seeks to enhance Qinghai embroidery's brand awareness and influence, showcase the cultural exchanges and interactions among diverse ethnic groups in the province, deepen and foster a sense of community for the Chinese nation, promote cultural prosperity, and exemplify Qinghai’s engagement in building a leading country in culture and developing the modern civilization of the Chinese nation.

The exhibition, consisting of three sections of long-standing heritage, craftsmanship techniques and the bright future of embroidery, features over 1,500 pieces of nationally and provincially recognized embroidery-related intangible cultural heritage artworks.
