Radiant Threads of Li People — Exhibition of Achievements in the Safeguarding of Traditional Li Textile Techniques
2024-12-06The traditional spinning, dyeing, weaving, and embroidering techniques of the Li people are practiced in Hainan to create clothing and daily necessities from natural fibers like cotton and hemp. With a history spanning centuries, these techniques are best known for producing the iconic "Li Brocade".
In the absence of a traditional written language, Li Brocade serves as a vital cultural artifact, preserving and conveying the history, wisdom, memories, and emotions of the Li ethnic group.
In 2006, these traditional techniques were recognized as part of the first national-level list of intangible cultural heritage in China. Three years later, they were inscribed on UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.
Since the 18th National Congress of the CPC in 2012, significant progress has been made in safeguarding and transmitting this heritage. The number of skilled practitioners has increased, contributing to cultural preservation, poverty alleviation, and rural revitalization.
In December 2024, the Li textile techniques were added to UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, marking a major milestone that reflects China's preservation efforts since it joined the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage 20 years ago. This accomplishment underscores the integration of intangible cultural heritage into contemporary life, fostering sustainable social and economic development.
The exhibition is divided into four sections: “Hundreds of Blossoms and Thousands of Splendors”, “Artistry in Weaving and Dyeing”, “Strengthening Safeguarding through Collective Efforts”, and “Rising Tides in Hainan”. Each section explores a unique facet of the Li people’s spinning, dyeing, weaving, and embroidering techniques, including their historical significance, distinctive craftsmanship, preservation initiatives, and innovative development.
By showcasing the beauty of Li Brocade, the exhibition highlights the achievements in safeguarding intangible cultural heritage in Hainan. It also promotes the creative transformation and innovative development of this heritage in the modern era, ensuring its enduring relevance and vitality.
