Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition of Hotan Prefecture, Xinjiang
2025-12-02
Hotan, once known as Yutian, is nestled against the majestic Kunlun Mountains to the south and borders the vast Taklamakan Desert to the north. The Hotan, Keriya, and Niya rivers originate from the Kunlun Mountains, and flow northward to create a fertile oasis.
Hotan is renowned for its jade and marks the beginning of the Jade Road. As early as prehistoric times, Hotan jade was transported to the Central Plains. Many jade artifacts unearthed from the Tomb of Fu Hao at the Yin Ruins of the Shang Dynasty (c. 16th century-11th century BC) are made of Hotan jade, a significant component of Chinese jade culture.
Through the ancient Silk Road, advanced agricultural techniques from the Central Plains, such as mulberry planting, silkworm breeding, silk weaving reeling and papermaking, as well as the culture and arts of the Central Plains, were introduced to and flourished in Hotan. Meanwhile, Buddhism, Yutian music and dance, and the Yutian painting school reached the Central Plains. Hotan’s history and culture exemplify the five prominent characteristics of Chinese civilization: continuity, innovation, unity, inclusiveness, and peace. This underscores the historical fact that all ethnic groups in China have jointly developed the vast territory, established a unified multi-ethnic nation, created brilliant history, crafted a splendid culture, and nurtured a great national spirit.
The exhibition is divided into six sections, presenting approximately 30 national and regional intangible cultural heritage projects from Hotan through physical exhibits, video displays, skill demonstrations, and interactive experiences. Nearly 600 items are on display, focusing on projects like the silk dyeing and weaving, construction technique, carpet weaving technique, and mulberry paper making from Xinjiang. During the exhibition, supporting activities such as cultural performances, handicraft experiences, and lectures will offer visitors a comprehensive and immersive understanding of Hotan's intangible cultural heritage and the beauty of Xinjiang.
This exhibition is held to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.
