Inheritance and Innovation: Anxi Rattan and Ironwork Exhibition
2025-11-11
The craft of rattan and ironwork has its roots in the ancient art of bamboo and rattan weaving. In the early 1990s, building on this traditional craft, artisans in Anxi creatively combined sturdy metal materials with flexible rattan, achieving a harmonious blend of strength and flexibility, and pioneered the art form known as "rattan and ironwork" in China. This innovative practice represents an organic fusion of traditional folk techniques and metalworking, and is a brilliant crystallization of traditional craftsmanship and modern creative inspiration.
Rattan and ironwork, with its high practicality, decorative appeal, aesthetic value, and artistic quality, embodies a rich cultural heritage and enduring artistic charm. It not only preserves and protects traditional Chinese crafts but also fosters innovation and development in the arts and crafts industry. In August 2019, Anxi was awarded the title of "World Capital of Rattan and Ironwork" by the World Crafts Council.
This exhibition, themed "Inheritance and Innovation," aims to showcase how Anxi's rattan and iron art creates a vibrant dialogue between tradition and modernity, and between inheritance and innovation. The exhibited works retain the warm and rustic natural qualities of bamboo and rattan weaving, while integrating the structural tension and contemporary aesthetics of metal materials, reflecting the artisans' ongoing exploration of materials, forms, and functions.
